The last in the currently published Dexter series was eagerly anticipated & I was not disappointed!
Dexter Morgan is back. After his surprisingly glorious honeymoon in Paris, life is almost normal for Dexter Morgan. Married life seems to agree with him: he’s devoted to his bride, his stomach is full, and his homicidal hobbies seem nicely under control. But old habits die hard-and Dexter’s work as a blood spatter analyst never fails to offer new temptations that appeal to his offbeat sense of justice…and his Dark Passenger still waits to hunt with him in the moonlight. Luckily for Dex, there’s someone out there with particularly twisted tastes. Dexter may have never been a big fan of art – but the discovery of a corpse (artfully displayed as a sunbather relaxing on a beach chair) naturally piques his curiosity. Miami’s finest soon realize they’ve got a terrifying new serial killer on the loose. And Dexter, of course, is back in business. From the most original voice in crime fiction, DEXTER BY DESIGN is an enthralling, macabre and gruesomely entertaining thriller.
In this the latest installment we get to see a lot more of Daddy Dexter, the Dexter who has suddenly become a family man who is having to find creative new ways to ply his trade without getting caught. The book beings with Dexter & Rita on honeymoon in Paris, where they do all the usual touristy things, until they stumble upon a darkly disturbing art installment which involves some very interesting displays that have Dexter’s Dark Passenger chuckling with delight.
Upon Dexter’s return to Miami things heat up with the discovery of a body “artfully” displayed. The murders quickly escalate to a worrying point & the killer seems to have developed an unhealthy attraction for all things Dexter & all things important to Dexter.
I flew through this book in about a day & 1/2 & I loved it! Rumor has it that there is another Dexter book in development, but that it is going to be over 2 years before it is available. Shame as I really am going to be in a desperate need of a Dexter fix a lot sooner than that!
Dexter in the Dark is the third installment in the Dexter series (of which the TV series is loosely based). I have read the first two books & loved them, but have to admit that I was more than a little wary about reading this one, as I had heard a few bad things about it. I needn’t have worried quite so much! This was by no means Mr. Lindsay’s best novel to date – the second in the series was far & away the best so far. The second book had me hooked, unable to put it down & it had me laughing out loud in so many places. This book made me chuckle, and I really enjoyed reading it, but it just wasn’t as good as the previous offering.
There was nothing overtly wrong with this book, but it just didn’t live up to Dearly Devoted Dexter. This books sees Dexter lose his Dark Passenger after attending a murder scene where a couple of bodies are found in gruesome circumstances. The rest of the book is centred around Dexter trying to find what has made his Dark Passenger disappear, while preparing for his upcoming wedding & trying to figure out how he is going to keep up his hobby if/when his Dark Passenger returns, while being the “upstanding married man citizen” he is trying to make people believe he is.
Dexter in the Dark , while not as good a read as Dearly Devoted Dexter, it still made me laugh out loud in places & chuckle in others, just not as much as I had hoped, based on the previous offering. If you have read the first two books & have heard bad reviews about this one, I would say – don’t listen to the reviews, just read the book & judge for yourself. I read it & have no regrets about having done so.
I started reading Dearly Devoted Dexter last night & was up until 1am reading, then back up around 7 O’clock this morning to pick up where I had left off. I found myself giggling or out-right laughing out loud so much with this book ~ is this wrong? Should one find a book about a serial killer funny? I definitely think so, at least in the case of this particular series of books!
Dearly Devoted Dexter is the follow-up to Darkly Dreaming Dexter & I think that was even better than the last offering! This one picks up where Darkly Dreaming Dexter left off & talks about what happened at the end of the previous book, so you really should make sure if you decide to read these books, that you read them in the order they were written. In this book Dexter is being harassed by Sargent Doakes, the man who seems to see that there is more to Dexter than meets the eye. Doakes is determined to catch Dexter up to no good & comes fairly close. As a result of his believing that Dexter is up to no good, Doakes starts staking out Dexter’s house, forcing Dexter to take drastic action, with hilarious results. Eventually Dexter & Doakes are forced to work together & one of them has to act as the bait in order to catch a serial killer who is on the loose – one of them will come out unscathed, but which one?
As I mentioned at the begining, I found myself laughing out load a lot with this book. Lindsay has given Dexter a very funny, very dry sense of humor & it’s great! Dexter really is a serial killer you could grow to love – I know I have! Will you?
I finished reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter late last night & I thought it was a brilliant book! Thank you to Charm from the Book Club Forum for sending it to me.
The blurb on the back of the books says “Dexter Morgan appears to be the perfect gentleman. He leads a normal, quiet life working as a forensic officer for the Miami Police. He has a nice, shy girlfriend and is like by her young children. But Dexter has a secret hobby. He’s an accomplished serial killer. So far he’s killed dozens of people and has never been caught, because he knows exactly how to dispose of the evidence. And there are those who would rather he wasn’t caught at all, because Dexter is a serial killer with a difference. He only kills the city’s bad guys. Then Dexter’s well-organised life is thrown into chaos. Another serial killer is invading his territory – and he wants Dexter to come out and play…….”
Dexter, in my opinion, is a brilliant character! He’s charming, likable, funny and ………a mass murderer! In the debut Dexter novel Dexter is haunted (or is it hunted) by a serial killer who’s killing prostitutes in the Miami area. This killer seems to know a lot about Dexter & his hobby & uses this knowledge to his advantage.
Through the course of the novel we learn a lot about what makes Dexter tick – and it is somewhat shocking what has made Dexter become the person he is – the guy who blends in, has a girlfriend, seems normal, quite human. Only, Dexter’s not human, he’s a monster, but a monster with a conscience?
I found myself laughing out load in many places & racing through the pages needing to know what was going to happen next! I already have the 2nd in the Dexter series & I can’t wait to get it started!
